RMMRJWGN–When Empress Matilda (1102 – 1167), also known as the Empress Maude, and daughter of King Henry I of England attemped to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1141, her plans collapsed in the face of bitter opposition from the London crowds. She retreated to the Castle in Oxford, a secure town, protected by walls, but Stephen stormed the town, trapping Matilda in the castle. Matilda sneaked out of the castle, crossed the icy river on foot and escaped to safety at Wallingford.

Stephen was freed only after his wife and William of Ypres, one of his military commanders, captured Robert at the Rout of Winchester, but the war dragged on for many years with neither side able to win an advantage.

As a result Matilda was never formally declared Queen of England, and following her retreat became trapped in Oxford Castle by Stephen's forces.

RMMPA39R–Matilda of Scotland (1080–1118), originally christened Edith, was the daughter of the Scottish king Malcolm III and Queen of England as the first wife of King Henry I after they married in late 1100. She led a literary and musical court, but was also pious and embarked on building projects for the church. Matilda acted as regent of England in the absence of her spouse on several occasions and took a role in government when her husband was away. Many surviving charters were signed by her.

RMMPA2FW–On 11 November 1100 King Henry I (1068–1135), fourth son of William the Conqueror, married Matilda, the daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland in Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1100. Although Henry and Matilda were emotionally close, their union was also politically motivated. Matilda was a member of the West Saxon royal family, being the niece of Edgar the Ætheling, the great-granddaughter of Edmund Ironside and a descendant of Alfred the Great. For Matilda, an ambitious woman, it was an opportunity for high status and power in England.

RMKTT7HB–Oxford Castle was an 11th Century Norman medieval castle on the western side of central Oxford where it played an important role in the conflict of the Anarchy, a civil war in England between 1135 and 1153. The conflict was a succession crisis precipitated by the accidental death of William Adelin, the only legitimate son of Henry I, in 1120. Henry's attempts to install his daughter, the Empress Matilda, as his successor were unsuccessful and on Henry's death in 1135, his nephew Stephen of Blois seized the throne with the help of Stephen's brother, Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester.

RM2B03A2Y–The 'Road to Canossa', sometimes called the 'Walk to Canossa' or 'Humiliation of Canossa', refers to Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV's trek to Canossa Castle, Italy, where Pope Gregory VII was staying as the guest of Margravine Matilda of Tuscany, at the height of the investiture controversy in January 1077 to seek absolution of his excommunication. According to contemporary sources, he was forced to humiliate himself on his knees waiting for three days and three nights before the entrance gate of the castle, while a blizzard raged.
