It was located between Whitecross Street and the modern Golden Lane, just outside the City of London and was contemporary with Shakespeare's Globe, The Swan and others. Parliament ordered all theatres closed in 1642, and the Fortune entered a slow but irreversible decline. In 1649, soldiers pulled down the stage and the gallery seats. By the Restoration, it had partially collapsed, and was sold as scrap.
