A medieval wedding procession. Elizabethan wedding customs dictated that the woman had very little say over who her husband might be, indeed many couples met for the very first time on their wedding day. Marriages were arranged so that both families would benefit and bring prestige or wealth to the family. During the Elizabethan era of history women were very much 'second class citizens' and regardless of their social standing they were expected to marry. RMPX76T8–Samuel Daniel (1562-1619) was an English poet and historian, born near Taunton in Somerset, the son of a music-master. He studied at Oxford University before becoming tutor to the family of Lord Herbert and later other members of the aristocracy. He translated work from Latin to English and then began to publish his own prose and verse. In 1603 he was given a royal appointment and produced a series of masques. His work and particularly the format he adopted for sonnets, was referred to and emulated by later writers.
