RM2B00WXC–Laos: Two pack elephants transport straw in a small village in southern Laos in 1897. As a ‘Beast of Burden’, the Asiatic elephant was not highly rated. It could carry little more than 150 kg despite its great size. They could not be overworked for fear of heart strain, and required constant care and feeding. Often the elephants’ feet were hobbled to prevent them wandering. Most working elephants were used for carrying timber, which they did with their trunks.

In the autumn, flowers from orchards upriver fall into the water, giving it an aromatic smell—hence the name 'Perfume River'. The Perfume River has two sources, both of which begin in the Day Truong Son mountain range and meet at Bang Lang fork. The 30-km river passes the landmarks of the Hon Chen Temple and the Ngoc Tran Temple.

In the 19th century, the Asian Elephant held a prominent position in Siam, although they were hunted regularly north of Ayutthaya and the Lao States (present day, Chiang Mai province and Isan). Not only were elephants used as beasts of burden in agriculture and for hauling timber, but they were active in war leading cavalry charges against the enemy.
