It was written by Graham Moffat, playwright and promoted by Oscar Hammerstein ( Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II). This photo shows the actors in the original performance. The play was staged at the Playhouse, London, then ran for some 600 performances at the Haymarket Theatre. The cast was very much a family affair and included Moffat, wife Maggie (who designed the costumes and was an active suffragette), their daughter Winifred, also two brothers, and a sister.

In the early 1900s, Pathé became the world's largest film equipment and production company, and produced phonograph records. Pathé invented the newsreel in 1908 which was shown in cinemas before feature films. Though this is dated 1903, most records state that it was released in 1909 in the USA. It is possible that this was an earlier English release or French language version?
