John Fletcher (1579–1625) was a Jacobean playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; during his lifetime and in the early Restoration, his fame rivalled Shakespeare's. Though his reputation has been far eclipsed since, Fletcher remains an important transitional figure between the Elizabethan popular tradition and the popular drama of the Restoration. Philip Massinger (1583-1640) was an English dramatist. His finely plotted plays, including A New Way to Pay Old Debts, The City Madam and The Roman Actor, are noted for their satire and realism, and their political and social themes. It seems doubtful that Massinger was ever a popular playwright, for the best qualities of his plays would appeal rather to politicians and moralists than to the ordinary playgoer. Thomas Dekker (1572-1632) was an English Elizabethan dramatist and pamphleteer, a versatile and prolific writer, whose career spanned several decades and brought him into contact with many of the period's most famous dramatists. Jonson however, called Dekker a bumbling hack, a 'dresser of plays about town'and lampooned him Poetaster and Cynthia's Revels. Dekker's riposte, Satiromastix cast Jonson as an affected, hypocritical Horace. Nathaniel or Nathan Field (1587-1620) was an English dramatist and actor.
