While it may strike us as quaint, this scene represented modern French industry at its most advanced in 1855. Speeding down the tracks that Baldus presented with rushing perspective, trains traveling from Paris to Boulogne-sur-Mer averaged an astonishing thirty-two miles per hour and arrived at their destination in less than one-third the time required by horse-drawn coach.
