Also known as Anderson shelters, after the then Minister of Home Security, Sir John Anderson, they were a form of protection against air raids in WW2, being steel made structures buried halfway in the ground and covered with a layer of thick earth. Building of them began in 1938 as a pre-emptive move as war was on the horizon and air attacks were inevitable.
