Born into a Jewish family from Lambeth, Modlyn was known for his cockney accent and his broadcast forte was interviewing ordinary people, a technique that became known as 'Vox Pop'. Addressing people with the words 'Ullo darlin', his east end working class persona saw him have conversations about anything and everything during a long and distinguished broadcasting career in both television and radio, both for the BBC and commercial radio.
