Part of the War of Jenkin's Ear between Great Britain and Spain, James Oglethorpe led a band of English soldiers, militia, and Chickasaw and Creek Nation soldiers. After capturing several Spanish forts, Oglethorpe attacked St. Augustine in a 27 day bombardment with British ships blockading the port. However the Spanish were able to get supplies through the blockade and Oglethorpe was forced to withdraw on land due to hurricane season.
