Skipper Of The Bombed USS Callaway. Coast Guard Captain Donald C. McNeil, of West Newton, Mass., is skipper of the USS Callaway, the Coast Guard-manned invasion transport which the Navy reported today as 'back in action' after being attacked by Japanese planes in the Sulu Sea prior to the Luzon landings. The Coast Guard-manned ship suffered nearly 50 casualties and damage to her superstructure when an enemy attacker planted a bomb near her flying bridge. The Callaway proceeded to Luzon, discharged her troops, and is credited with bagging three enemy planes before retiring for repairs.
