Mrs. Bethel and her husband David were theatrical designers ('Airs on a Shoestring'', ''Crazy Gang'' and other revues) and thinking how ''tatty'' the motorcycle crash helmets were, they set to and started decorating some with traditional British designs and some witty ditties. RM2E3JBTP–BRM H-16 Formula 1 car of Chris Irwin in the pits during the Practice day for the1967 British Grand Prix, at Silverstone on 14th July. The H-16 engine represented an unorthodox approach to engine design, having two crankshafts, one above the other, in effect two flat 'eights'. It proved extremely unreliable, and later in the 1967 season it was retired in favour of more conventional designs. The only significant success of the BRM H-16 engine it was when fitted in Jim Clark’s Lotus 45 in which he won the 1966 US Grand Prix.

A disappearing gun, a gun mounted on a disappearing carriage, is an piece of artillery hidden from view when not firing. British Army Captain (later Colonel Sir) Alexander Moncrieff (1929–1906) improved on existing designs for a gun carriage capable of rising over a parapet before being reloaded from behind cover. His key innovation was a practical counterweight system that raised the gun as well as controlled the recoil.
