When the independent Nawab of Bengal succeeded Alivardi Khan (his maternal grandfather) he ordered the English to stop the extension of their fortification. Clive bribed Mir Jafar, the commander-in-chief of the Nawab's army, and also promised to make him Nawab of Bengal. Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah at Plassey in 1757 and captured Calcutta.

RM2HC5FCD–A late 19th Century illustration of the death of Major-General James Wolfe (1727-1759), a British Army officer remembered chiefly for his victory in 1759 over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec. Wolfe led 4,400 men in an amphibious landing at the base of the cliffs west of Quebec along the St. Lawrence River. His army scaled the 200-metre cliff from the river and surprised the French under the command of the Marquis de Montcalm, who thought the cliff would be unclimbable and were defeated after fifteen minutes of battle, during which Wolfe was shot and died.
