Green of Blackwall for their Blackwall line run to Australia. She was sold to Devitt & Moore in 1888 and they changed her destination port from Melbourne to Sydney and her name to 'Macquarie'. She was one of Devitt & Moore's best known ships and mainly carried passengers on the outward run. On the return journey, the second- and third-class cabins were dismantled to accommodate a cargo of wool.

There were no deaths but the explosion caused extensive damage to Birkenhead and its effects were felt across Liverpool. It was severely damaged and was sold for scrap on 27 January.
