Tempers Frayed when the referee disallowed a goal as being offside, and scored by A.E.K., which would have ended the game in a draw. RM2BDNR68–1973, goal mouth action at the Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC. In the picture, the steep terraces and 'safety' metal barriers of the famous East Terrace. The name 'valley' came from the earth mounds surrounding the pitch which were turned into concrete terracing. By the 1930s, the 'Valley' was one of England's biggest and the massive East Terrace, with capacity at one point for up to 20,000 fans, the largest in the country. In 1979 capacity in the East Terrace was reduced to 10,000 and in 1984 the GLC applied to close it altogether as the required repairs had not been undertaken.
