Bronze statuette of a solar deity. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: H.: 9 13/16 in. (24.9 cm). Date: 3rd-2nd century B.C.. The idealized features and seminudity of this carefully executed bronze statuette suggest that he represents a deity. The radiate crown indicates a solar deity, perhaps Apollo or Helios (called by the Etruscans Apulu and Usil). The object in his left hand may be an incense box. Perhaps his missing right hand once held a patera (libation bowl) resembling that held by another larger male figure (16.174.4). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Terracotta globular cup. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: H.: 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm). Date: ca. 520-510 B.C.. Male and female figures flanked by heraldic lions The subject of this vase is unusual: a male figure wearing winged boots and holding a bow and an axe pursues a woman carrying a bow. Do the figures represent divine characters, perhaps Apulu (Apollo) and his twin sister Artumes (Artemis)? The bow is a typical attribute of both these deities, and winged boots often signify a divine or supernatural being in Etruscan art. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
