RFER4TMY–The Animas River is part of the Colorado River System. A Spanish explorer named Juan Maria de Rivera of Santa Fe recorded the name Rio de las Animas, which translates in to English as 'River of Souls,' in 1765. The photo dates to c. 1900 and shows a train locomotive passing through a very dangerous section of the railway—Toltec Gorge. Today, the railroad here is he highest and longest narrow gauge steam railroad in the U.S. The train line was originally constructed in the 1880s.
