RMT96JJ4–Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de la Marck (August 1, 1744-December 18, 1829), often known simply as Lamarck, was a French naturalist. He was a soldier, biologist, academic, and an early proponent of the idea that evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with natural laws. His theory of evolution was based on the idea that acquired characteristics are inherited. After 1800 he put forward general ideas on plant and animal species, which he believed were not ''fixed''.
RF2DTYAKK–This 2-headed calf was most likely a real animal born of a normal cow. Abnormal births have always happened, probably within most animal species, throughout history. In the 1800s, and maybe for then, such animals were sometimes stuffed and exhibited by small, traveling circuses and in the sideshows of larger circuses. City folk would have been quite shocked or impressed by such natural curiosities. This circa 1910 photograph would have been sold regularly at any sideshow or circus that had this exhibit. Known primarily as a sculptor of predatory encounters between animal species, Barye also painted the varied landscape of the Fontainebleau Forest in a number of oil studies. Barye’s deliberately coarse handling of his medium provides a tactility of surface evocative of the landscape itself. He kept such works in a cupboard, showing
