There were several types of vase in ancient Athens for perfumed oils. The aryballos and alabastra were small, and their round bases prevented them from standing on their own. They required a support or were suspended from a cord. The plemochoe has a flat base but on fifth-century vases is often shown being carried by a woman. RMW0M5BA–The Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus is a major theatre in Athens, considered to be the world's first theatre, built at the foot of the Athenian Acropolis. Dedicated to Dionysus, the god of plays and wine (among other things), the theatre could seat as many as 17,000 people with excellent acoustics, making it an ideal location for ancient Athens' biggest theatrical celebration, the Dionysia. It was the first theatre ever built, cut into the southern cliff face of the Acropolis, and supposedly the birthplace of Greek tragedy and a site that has been used as a theatre since the sixth century BC.

After the death of Philip II, King of Macedonia, Demosthenes played a leading part in his city's uprising against Alexander the Great. However, his efforts failed and Alexander's successor in Athens, Antipater, sent his men to track Demosthenes down. Demosthenes took his own life, in order to avoid arrest.
