A 1904 colour portrait of Curley (or Curly - circa 1856–1923) the Crow American Indian scout who witnessed and survived the Battle of theLittle Big Horn in 1876. Real name Ashishishe, he was a scout for the U.S Army under Custer during the Sioux Wars. Despite many records to the contrary, he did not actually take part in the battle, but observed it and reported the defeat of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. His name also recorded as Shishi'esh meant 'the crow'. Later he lived on the Crow Reservation on the bank of the Little Bighorn River near the battle site and served inthe Crow police.
