During the reconstruction of the temple in 1895 (Meiji 28), there was no rope strong enough to hoist the temple’s massive wooden beams. In response, female devotees cut off their hair and braided it into strong and thick ropes. To this day, the rope is still on display, albeit now in a glass case. 20th century vintage glass slide.

The Battle of Mukden (奉天会戦, Hoten kaisen) was fought between Japanese and Russian forces between February 20 and March 10, 1905 (Meiji 38). It was one of the largest land battles to be fought before World War I and the last and the most decisive major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War. The city is now called Shenyang. The temple was known as a sumo wrestling venue during the Edo (1603-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. The first bout was held here in September 1768. From October 1833 (Tenpo 4) to 1909 (Meiji 42), the period of “Eko-in Sumo” (回向院相撲), all sumo tournaments were held at the temple. 20th century vintage glass slide.

The building was designed by Japanese architect Shichijiro Satachi, one of the first four students to study under British architect Josiah Conder and graduate from the Imperial College of Engineering (now the Faculty of Engineering of The University of Tokyo).
