RM2HP0EAR–A 1982 view of The Hilltop Steak House restaurant – and its distinctive ‘cactus’ sign – on Route 1 in Saugus, near Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It was founded in 1961 by Frank Giuffrida, a butcher from Lawrence, Massachusetts. He converted a small bar on Route 1 into a 125-seat American steakhouse. The restaurant became popular – later the restaurant's capacity was 1,500 seats. The cactus sign was erected in 1966. It contained 210 fluorescent light bulbs and nearly half a mile of neon tubing. Laker Airways was a private British airline founded by Sir Freddie Laker in 1966. Laker flew the world's inaugural ‘ABC’ (advance booking charter) trans-Atlantic flight in April 1973 from Manchester to Toronto using a ‘Skytrain’ DC-10. He was a pioneer in the no frills, low fare era and was initially successful. Other larger airlines lowered their fares to compete and Laker went bankrupt in 1982. The full name of the ‘National Stadium’ is ‘Grand Sports Arena of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex’. Its total seating capacity of 81,000 – the largest football stadium in Russia. The stadium was built in 1955–56 as the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium. The original stadium was demolished in 2013 to make way for a new stadium. However, the self-supported roof (built in1996) and the original facade wall were retained – a vintage 1960s photograph from an amateur colour transparency.

This stylish, environmentally-friendly receptacle would have been a rare sight at that time but is very common today. The Lijnbaan is the main shopping precinct of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953. It was the first purpose-built pedestrian street in Europe. Flower beds, benches and protective canopies were provided.
