RM2FWWCAA–The Rio Grande River; looking upstream; or westerly; at the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon; near Castolon; Texas; Big Bend National Park. Heartland of the Mescalero Apache; this was the last; most remote frontier along the Mexican Border. The Apache held that the Great Spirit; having completed making the Earth; used the Big Bend as a dumping ground for leftover rocks.

RM2FWWFCN–Nine attentive burros (Equus africanus asinus) in a cholla cactus garden in the Mojave Desert; California.? Burros were once cherished by prospectors and desert rats for their load carrying abilities and companionship.? They could always find a bite to eat where other large mammals starve.? They are so well adapted that they compete with native species; such as the endangered bighorn sheep.?
RM2FWWFA2–A sleeping sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) rattlesnake; in Death Valley; California. Curled for the night in on a warm lava bed; he won't be up until the sun brings his blood temperature up to operating range. Only at this hour would one dare presume to approach this close.

RM2FWWGH3–Tribune'; (named in honor of the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper; a major donor) was for many years the reigning alpha male grayback gorilla in the San Diego Wild Animal Park stable. As fearsome as he appeared; he was beloved of staff for his unwavering gentleness; with rambunctious infant gorillas and humans alike.
RM2FWWC5C–Blackbirds in the snow; in the Fall River Valley; California.?The red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae found in most of North and much of Central America.
RM2FWWFMM–Bighorn Sheep; Ovis canadensis; Rocky Mountains; southern British Columbia; Canada. A mature male Bighorn; with fully developed horns. High in the native American pantheon of shamanistic spirit helpers; associated with rain & rainmaking; the subject of many petroglyphs and pictographs; especially in the Great Basin of the western US.
RM2FWWB46–The mouth of the Colorado River where it enters the Sea of Cortez. All but a trickle of water has been diverted by the time the river channel reaches the Gulf of California; with serious consequences for the habitat.
RM2FWWB4E–Geologist Gene Shoemaker (foreground) and astronomer Carl Sagan at a science meeting for the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune; August 25; 1989. Shoemaker specialized in craters and was one of the discoverers of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet. Sagan was a well-known author and science writer as well as a pioneering exobiologist.
