Darius held the empire at its peak, then including most of Western Asia, Central Asia, the Indus Valley, portions of North Africa and even parts of Greece. The decay and eventual downfall of the empire commenced with his death and the ascension of his son, Xerxes I.

RMTWM39T–The Struggle Between Gobryas, a general for Darius I, aka Darius the Great - and Gomates the Magian who impersonated Smerdis, son of Cyrus the Great to rule the Achaemenid Empire for a few months in 522 BC. A number of Persian nobles discovered that their new ruler was an impostor, and plottd to kill him. Led by Gobryas, the plotters surprised Gomates at a castle in Nisa, located near Bagir village, in Turkmenistan. They stabbed him to death in September 522 BC. One of the seven, Darius, was proclaimed as ruler fourth Persian king of the Achaemenid Empire shortly after.
