Matthew Calbraith Perry was a Commodore of the U.S. Navy who compelled the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, when he threatened to bombard Edo (Tokyo) with his ships should they resist. Perry had commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). His advocacy for the modernisation of the U.S. Navy led to him being called 'The Father of the Steam Navy'.

The Battle of Sekigahara, popularly known as Tenka Wakeme no Tatakai or 'the Battle for the Sundered Realm', was a decisive battle on October 21, 1600, which cleared the path to the Shogunate for Tokugawa Ieyasu. Though it would take three more years for Ieyasu to consolidate his position of power over the Toyotomi clan and the daimyo, Sekigahara is widely considered to be the unofficial beginning of the Tokugawa bakufu, the last shogunate to control Japan.

Executing company was Cramer-Klett from Nuremberg.
