The Palace of Westminster, the medieval royal palace used as the home of the British parliament, was largely destroyed by fire on 16 October 1834. The blaze was caused by the burning of small wooden tally sticks, part of the accounting procedures of the Exchequer. The sticks were disposed of in a careless manner in the two furnaces under the House of Lords, which caused a chimney fire in the two flues that ran under the floor of the Lords' chamber and up through the walls. An old engraving of old Palace of Westminster, London, England, UK in the 1700s seen from the River Thames. The Palace of Westminster was the monarch's principal residence in the late Medieval period. The ‘Model Parliament’, the first official Parliament of England, met there in 1295. After 1707 all British Parliaments have met at the Palace. Christopher Wren in the late 17th century completely redesigned the interior. In 1834 fire broke out and most of the buildings in the palace complex were destroyed.

The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16 October 1834, 1835. On the night of October 16, 1834, fire consumed the Houses of Parliament in London. Londoners gathered along the banks of the river Thames to gaze in awe at the horrifying spectacle. Initially, a low tide made it difficult to pump water to fire-fighting equipment on land; likewise, it hampered steamers towing fire-fighting equipment up the river. Although the tides eventually shifted, the effort was futile, as the fire burned uncontrollably for hours. Claude Monet. Houses of Parliament, London. 1900–1903. France. Oil on canvas During his London campaigns, Claude Monet painted the Houses of Parliament in the late afternoon and at sunset from a terrace at Saint Thomas’s Hospital. This viewpoint was close to that of the English artist J. M. W. Turner in his visionary paintings of the fire that had destroyed much of the old Parliament complex in 1834. In his response to the poetry of dusk and mist, however, Monet was actually inspired by the work of a more recent painter of the Thames, the American James McNeill Whistler.
