A centuries old cottage, possibly the oldest in Cardiff, will soon be welcoming a new resident-its present owner is selling up and moving to California. When it was built around 1740 the two-up, two-down 'ty bach twt' cottage, in what is now Romilly Road, Cardiff, was the home for the gardner of one of the big houses which used to dominate the area. Once it stood on its own orchard, surrounded by flowers and green fields, but 50 years ago it was all but swallowed up when a local builder erected the terrace houses that was to become Romilly Road. An old engraving of Newcomen’s engine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The atmospheric engine (Newcomen or Newcomen fire engine) was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. The engine was operated by condensing steam drawn into the cylinder, thereby creating a partial vacuum which allowed the atmospheric pressure to push the piston into the cylinder. It was the first practical device to harness steam to produce mechanical power. Newcomen engines were used throughout the UK and Europe in the 1700s, principally to pump water out of mines.
