This 1890 illustration shows the 'exploit of Major Stobo.' Major Stobo was a Scotch-Virginia soldier in the French and Indian War (1754-1759). He was known for his exploit as a colonial prisoner of war in Canada during the war. Convicted as a spy, Stobo was sentenced to death, although his sentence was commuted to closed confinement. With the help of friends, he escaped twice. Both times, he was recaptured. However, the third time he tried, he got away safely. In disguise, he and eight other people set out in a canoe. Long Ship with 50 oars from mosaic found near Pozzuoli. Roman warships (naves longae) derived from Greek galley designs. In the ocean-going fleets, the three main designs were trireme, quadrireme, and quinquereme. During the Republic, the quinquereme was the standard ship. After the battle of Actium at the start of the Empire, the trireme became the main ship. Pozzuoli was an ancient seaside town probably best known for its bradyseism, a raising and lowering of the Earth’s surface due to underground volcanic activity. The deck itself is protected by an iron bulwark, sloping outward toward the top. Openings are made through the deck to the cabin below. . English: A Dutch ship riding to an anchor in a gale This may be a sketch for an intended painting. In the years around 1700 van de Velde and his studio produced a large number of highly dramatic paintings of ships being wrecked on a rocky coast or in peril in rough seas, a subject which had attracted Dutch marine painters from the nearly part of the 17th century, as well as their followers in England in the early part of the 18th century. In this drawing the main ship is riding to an anchor in a very heavy sea, and two other ships in a similar predicament can be seen beyond. An old engraving of the Battle of Cape Passaro, off Cape Passaro, southern Sicily in 1718. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. The battle, also known as Battle of Avola or Battle of Syracuse, was fought on 11 August 1718 between a fleet of the British Royal Navy under Admiral Sir George Byng and a fleet of the Spanish Navy. The battle was fought without a formal declaration of war but once the Spanish fired on the nearest British ships, this gave Byng his excuse to attack. The British were superior in numbers. The battle was a decisive victory for the British fleet.
