In Buddhism, in the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha compares himself to a lotus, stating that the lotus flower rises from the muddy water unsullied, free from the defilements taught in the specific sutta. Therefore the lotus symbolically represents purity of the body, speech and mind, floating beyond material attachment and physical desire. Lotus thrones are the normal pedestal for most important Buddhist figures in art.
