Workers smooth asphalt with paving machines. Between August 10 to September 10, 2016 the Greenway Trail between the IMAX Theater parking area in Tusayan and Center Road in Grand Canyon National Park will be closed while Grand Canyon's trail crew installs asphalt. The portion of the trail north of Center Road will not be affected. While the trail closure is in effect, cyclists and hikers may ride the Tusayan shuttle (Purple Route) which is equipped with bicycle carrier racks. The shuttle connects Tusayan with the South Rim Visitor Center, a 20 minute ride each way. The intent of this project

The shuttle connects Tusayan with the South Rim Visitor Center, a 20 minute ride each way. The intent of this project is to complete the paving of this section of the Greenway Trail in order to improve access for those entering the park on foot, bicycle or horseback. The park's greenway trail system now totals 18-and-one-half miles and the paved sections meet Accessibility Guidelines for Outdoor Developed Areas. It offers visitors and park residents of varying abilities a opportunity to enjoy the park without having to use their cars. In addition, the Tusayan Greenway is shared by a portion of the Arizona Trail.
