Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, near SicilyMore information:
The southernmost of the Aeolian Islands, about 25 km north of Sicily. It reaches 500 m in elevation and is still active, with the last major eruption from 1888-90. The word volcano is derived from this particular example and this type of explosive eruption is known as a "Vulcanian eruption." There have been at least 9 major eruptions in the past 9, 000 year and it poses a significant future risk to the neighbouring islands and is therefore closely monitored.
