48th World Coal Carrying Championships . The World Coal Carrying Championships is run every Easter Monday and starts at The Royal Oak, public house. Competitors, each carrying 1cwt. of coal, ( one hundredweight / approx 50kg ) have to run 1108. 25 yards (1012.5 metres) to the foot of the maypole on the village green. There is a womens race and two mens races - a "fun" run and a competitive race. There are also childrens races - shorter distance and less weight ! Gawthorpe is a small village situated on the outskirts of Ossett, near Wakefield West Yorkshire England. The coal carrying championships are recognised by The Guinness Book of Records . The first race was in 1963.
