The tree is an example of a sweet or spanish chestnut (latin name Castanea sativa) and was thought to have been introduced to britain by the romans but is rare in Scotland. The tree is rarely planted for timber because it has a natural tendency for the limbs and trunk to twist and form natural cracks or shakes and this makes it difficult to cut large sound planks.
Location: Scotland, UK.
