The San Buenaventura Mission stands on top of a knoll in the Gran Quivira ruins in central New Mexico. Gran Quivira is one of three distinctive parts of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument and was once home to a thriving community. One pueblo structure with 227 rooms dates back to around 1275 AD, and with successive Spaniards bringing their faith to the area, Gran Quivira remained inhabited until 1672, when disease, drought and Apache raids led to its abandonment.
