The river features in "The Hobbit" as the location for the barrel rider scene in The Desolation of Smaug. The area today is a popular tourist destination. The river provides opportunities for water sports and swimming. The Pelorus Scenic reserve is looked after and managed bt the Department for Conservation - DOC.
