The Secretary of State for War, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener was aboard HMS Hampshire sailing from Scapa Flow to Russia, when the Devonshire-class armoured cruiser of the Royal Navy is believed to have struck a mine laid by a German submarine approximately 1.5 mi (2.4 km) off the mainland of Orkney between Brough of Birsay and Marwick Head at 19:40 when an explosion occurred. The ship sank on 5 June 1916. The Kitchener Memorial on Mainland, Orkney, is on the cliff edge at Marwick Head, near the spot where Kitchener died at sea.
