The historical town of Figeac in the Lot region of France is the birthplace of Jean-François Champollion, the first translator of Egyptian hieroglyphics. In the Middle ages the town was a centre of trade with its wealthy merchants operating throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. These merchants built many great houses of the local fine-grained sandstone. These houses often carried terraces on the upper floors to make the most of the cool evening breezes.
