The foiba of Basovizza is a swallow-hole, it is in the locality Basovizza, in the municipality of Trieste, on the plateau of Carso. At the end of World War II the Yugoslav Army tried hundreds of local Fascist Inspectorate officers and military (including 40 Germans), they were shot after the trial and the bodies thrown into the foiba. In 1992 President of the Italian Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro has proclaimed the foiba of Basovizza National Monument. Today on foiba there is a heavy iron sheeting and a black wooden cross.
