Birnbeck Pier was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1867. It is the only pier in Britain that links the mainland to an island. It has been closed to the public since 1994 and, although it is a Grade II* listed building, it is now derelict. In 2013 the RNLI relocated its lifeboat station to another part of the town because of the pier's unsafe state.
