The Royal Exchange was founded in 1565 by Sir Thomas Gresham and was a centre for commerce and trade. The grasshopper was part of Gresham's crest (see the weathervane on the top of the tower). The current building dates from 1844 and was designed by Sir William Tite. Two previous buildings on the site were destroyed by fire. It is now a shopping centre selling luxury items.
