Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. September 2016. A mature British elm on the junction of Chelsea Road and Union Road in leafy Nether Edge in the city of Sheffield. The 150-year-old tree was earmarked for felling by Sheffield council and contracted firm, Amey as part of a street tree replacement programme. Local residents have campaigned to save the tree and tt has since been found to host a colony of white letter hairstreak butterflies, a rare species in decline nationally. In September 2016 it was included in the Woodland Trust’s tree of the year shortlist.
