The Medieval Merchant's House was built in 1290 as the home of a Southampton man who made his fortune trading with Bordeaux, and is one of the earliest surviving merchant's houses in England. It was both a residence and a place of business in the lively port of Southampton where traders from all over Europe and the middle east, including Bordeaux, Genoa and Venice landed cargoes of wine and other goods.
