Northerners saved an average of 84 a month during the three months to the end of June, compared with the 66 southerners set aside, according to Birmingham Midshires. This was despite people in the North earning an average of 1, 828 a month before tax, more than 500 less than the 2, 382 earnings of southerners. 28/08/04: Britons are gradually increasing the amount they save for retirement but more needs to be done to encourage people to put money away for their retirement, the Association of British Insurers said. 11/09/04: Nearly a third of Britons have no savings or insurance policies to fall back on if they were unable to work, research claimed. Only 53% of people have taken steps to make sure they could continue to meet their mortgage repayments and other outgoings if they lost their job or became too ill to work, while 16% are unsure if they have any cover in place.
