Spain Seville Semana Santa Holy Week Easter What Holy Week is one of the most important events in Seville which is celebrated for centuries, its origins probably date back to the fourteenth century. The fraternities are a procession of penance in the streets (often narrow) of the city, from their church to the Cathedral and back, making one struck the shortest possible, so as decreed by order of Cardinal Niño de Guevara in the seventeenth century.Processions and mysteries Most brotherhoods carry in procession two mysteries: one with Christ, representing scenes from the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the other with the Virgin. Some brotherhoods carry in procession three mysteries including: Love, Last Supper, San Benito or the Trinity, others only one, Holy Week, the Fifth Anguish, the Solitude of St. Bonaventure or the Solitude of San Lorenzo. In these eight days, a total of 57 brotherhoods carry their 116 mysteries from his church to the Cathedral and back, accompanied by around 60, 000 brothers participating with different functions: • Nazarenes • Penitents • porters • Chierichetti Reach one million viewers during the most important night of Holy Week Seville Alba (the night between Thursday and Friday), when the brotherhoods of Silence, the Great Power, of Calvary, the Gypsies, the Hope of Triana and Macarena undertake their procession to the Cathedral of Seville.
