Clumps of sea kale, Crambe maritima, on the shingle beaches at Hayling Island, near Portsmoputh, Hampshire, south eastern England. The leaves of sea kale, also known as sea cabbage, are edible either cooked or raw, as are the flowers, although the tough outer leaves can be somewhat bitter to taste. This perennial was once pickled and used on long sea voyages as a prevention for scurvy.
