Sankey (St. Helens) Canal near Widnes which used to connect St. Helens to the River Mersey at West Bank, Widnes. The canal and much of the surrounding bank is now a nature reserve and/or a recreational area. The canal was left to decay and silt up prior to being turned into a natural habitat for birds and aquatic life. The remaining chemical plants and power station on the left of the image are all that remain from the industrial period which saw chemical works all the way from West Bank in Widnes through to the power station.
