Agrippina was the great-granddaughter of Rome's first emperor, Augustus. She was also the sister of the emperor Caligula. She was the mother of the Roman emperor Nero, who ruled from A.D. 54-68. Nero had been adopted by Claudius, Agrippina's uncle and her third husband. Ancient historians offer various accounts of exactly how Agrippina' was killed by her son. Nero had plotted several times to do so, but the attempts failed. Finally, he sent assassins to murder her and they did. This painting of Nero standing by the corpse of his dead mother Agrippina being carried up the stairs is by 19th-century German artist Friedrich Klein-Chevalier.
