Looking upstream at The Strid on the Bolton Abbey Estate, North Yorkshire. This is a rocky chasm where the River Wharfe is forced through a very narrow funnel. As a result, the river surges through the gap and visitors are warned not to jump what appears to be the safe distance to the opposite bank. A number of people have been killed doing just this! The surrounding wood is an ancient acidic oak woodland and is a site of special scientific interest.
