Policemen in West Berlin and customs officers not far away from a closed bucher's shop in Bernauer Street in Berlin, 7 July 1961. The shop belongs to East Berlin, the Western part of the city begins from the pavement in front of the shop. From 13 August 1961, the day of the building of the Berlin Wall, until the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR were separated by the Iron Curtain between West and East.
