The well preserved ancient city of Perge was founded by colonists originating from the Peloponnese in Greece. It prospered during the Hellenistic period and from 133 BC was under the control of the Roman Empire. It flourished greatly under the Roman rule and into the early Byzantine period until it was abandoned in the 7th century AD. Most of the archaeological remains seen today are from the Roman period.
